My name is Neri Ramirez. I am twenty-six years old and I am a tattooist out of Palm Springs, California. My family migrated from Argentina when I was seven years old and I have been in Palm Springs ever since. Growing up I was heavily influenced by hip-hop culture, graffiti, and the skateboarding scene. At the age of 14, I made my first homemade tattoo machine and with it began to tattoo my neighborhood friends. The first few years of tattooing were not pretty, but I stuck with it and over time I started to see some progress. I tattooed from home until I was twenty-one, then finally decided I needed to learn how to properly tattoo from professionals. I was fortunate enough to land an apprenticeship at Adornment in Palm Springs, and it was the best decision I’ve ever made. Taking on an apprenticeship was one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done; but looking back on it, it was one of the best times of my life. I learned more in a few months than I ever would have learned on my own. I apprenticed under some amazing artist for a year and a half before they released me from my apprenticeship – by tattooing the back of my knee. Today I continue to see myself as an apprentice and strive to learn something new every day. I try to be well rounded in all styles of tattooing, but I do favor black and grey realism and script.
